What’s been going on with writing? 
 
Since returning from half-term, the school has been buzzing with different types of writing from Reception through to Year Six; let’s have a look at what each year group has been doing! 
Our oldest pupils in the school have been focussing on film reviews. Continuing from last half-term, pupils have created a film review about Toy Story 3 and compared it to existing ones and now they are writing one based on the short film ‘Dum Spiro’. 
 
Our soon-to-be oldest pupils in the school (Year Five), have been writing persuasive letters. They have explored the appropriate levels of formality required for such letters and have written to David Walliams, requesting that he helps the school increase our capacity for reading. 
 
In Year Four, pupils have been creating instructional texts based on their topic: Ancient Egyptians. As we all know, Ancient Egypt was renowned for mummies and the mummification process; as a result, they have written instructional texts on how to mummify... a banana! ‘Tutanbanamoon’ has been mummified and is preparing for the process of burial. 
 
Year Three have been focussing on various Roman myths. These Myths have coincided with their topic, and they have been working towards writing their own myths by exploring others. They are building their way up to creating their own versions of Roman myths. 
 
Our Year Twos have been focussing on The Great Fire of London. They have created a non-chronological report about the tragic events that decimated London in 1666. This has been their focal point for their writing since the start of the half-term. 
 
Heading down to Year One, they have been focussing on the story ‘Starry-eyed Stan’. With this story, they have been exploring characters and how authors describe them. Amazingly, they themselves have become authors and are creating their own character descriptions. 
 
Finally, we come to our youngest writers: our budding Reception pupils. In Reception, they have been reading non-fiction books about mini-beasts and have used their phonics skills to create their own facts about these little critters – I hope their teachers haven’t been too scared of these so-called beasts.
