In Year One, we have started to explore this term’s science topic of  animals including humans. We have so far enjoyed learning about what living things are and have identified a variety of common animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals and insects. In addition, we have had fun classifying a variety of common animals into carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores. Here are some of comments from pupils in 1BA about what they have learnt and liked about the topic so far.

Hannah – liked that animals have fur and humans are omnivores.
Henry -  liked what animals eat.
Jenson – liked when we sorted how animals feed into a venn diagram.
Nathan – liked the classification of animals.
Violet – living things reproduce.
Davey – living things have babies.
Emalee – Mammals give their babies milk.
Jamee – learnt that animals that eat meat are carnivores.

As usual, British Science Week (BSW) will be jam-packed with STEM activities and lessons, however this year we wanted to do a whole school project, which we started this week. To celebrate the theme of ‘Growth’ we will be completing a whole school planting project.

​Each class will have their own spring bulbs to plant in their classrooms, take care of, and monitor the growth of from now until their bloom in Spring (which will hopefully align with BSW). 

​Each year group has followed instructions to plant their bulb into a pot and have assigned weekly monitors to ensure it has enough water.
We look forward to watching them grow throughout this term and are eager to see which class will bloom first!

This week in Science, Year 4 explored patterns between the pitch of a sound and features of the object that produced it. We recapped our understanding of how sound is made when objects vibrate. These vibrations make the air around the object vibrate and the air vibrations travel into our ears.
 
During our lesson we conducted an experiment related to pitch. We began by making predictions about how the pitch of noise would change when we blew over the top of bottles with different amounts of water in them.

Pupil Blog 4MR

We have been learning about The Lorax and describing the setting and objects from the book using adjectives and similes. We also added facts, opinions, exaggeration, rule of 3 and emotive language to persuade people to buy a Thneed; which is a type of scarf in The Lorax.

In PE we have been learning how to play racket sports like tennis and badminton. We practised backhand, touch shots, underarm serves, and footwork to help us play rallies.

We have enjoyed maths as we are recapping and getting better at our times tables using music and our work.
In computing we have been learning about Google slides where we could design our own slide show, add images, edit the text and lay out of each slide and present it.

Science and music have been linked as we have been learning how vibration causes noise. We blew air across different bottles filled with different amounts of water to investigate how pitch is changed. We played the xylophones and learned how to perform Twinkle Twinkle little star and Happy Birthday to you. We then had a chance to create our own  melody.

This week in year 2:
 
In Science, we have been learning about the basic needs of a animals and humans. We identified that air, food, shelter, and water. We learnt that animals have similar needs to humans, however, animals eat differently to humans. We looked at omnivores, carnivores and herbivores. Finally, we discussed how their habitat depends on their basic needs. For example, if the animal has fur and is a omnivore then animal wouldn’t live in a marine habitat.
 
We used the iPads this week to locate different places in the United Stated of America and Russia that were important in the space race.

In History, we learnt about the moon landing. We put the event into chronological order and then discussed the impacted it had to civilisation.
