1FK Pupil Blog

Read Now

It has been a great start to the year for IFK. The children have all settled well and have adapted to their new classroom and routines amazingly well.
1FK have had a very busy first term learning lots of new things. In our English lessons, we have been focusing on the story of Pinocchio. We were able to use speech to explore conversation and used descriptive language to explore onomatopoeia, feelings and inner thoughts.
During our enrichment day we had lots of fun exploring and learning about wheels and axels. We became very creative and designed our peg cars. We finally finished our project by making and decorating our peg cars.
We ended our peg car project by evaluating the cars.
What did you like best about your car?
DH – The colour of my wheels, it’s my favourite colour.
CM – My car looks cool.
AH – I like the way my car moves.
MD – I like the colours.
EP – My car is pretty.

The Write Stuff at ETPS

Read Now

The Write Stuff is in full swing at East Tilbury now! The Write Stuff is a new scheme of writing within our school which involves a lot of sentence stacking (creating their own sentences based on different parts of a story), chotting (chatting and jotting) and drama-orientated tasks. All the units then lead to a pupil-led, independent write and I must say, the work seen by teachers has been very impressive!

In reception:
We have been reading Funnybones by Janet and Allen Ahlberg using our Fantastics to describe and narrate the story. Grandma Fantastic has been bringing us a range of interesting vocabulary to improve our writing. We have been creating our own meaningful moments by engaging our senses and using drama to support our writing.

Year One:
We have been looking at the story of Pinocchio. We have been writing sentences to describe characters and settings. We have become far more confident with our language ideas over the last few weeks.

Year Two:
We have started at new unit about Big Cats. We are learning to write non-chronological reports and have identifies the features. We have learned lots of interesting facts about cheetahs. We will then apply our knowledge to write a report about another big cat.

Year Four:
We have started to look at the story ‘Farther’ by Grahame Baker-Smith, pupils are looking at key plot points within the narrative and looking at key sentences within the text. Children have also explored the front cover and attempted to use their detective skills to work out what they think might happen. We are working our way up to writing our own journey story.

Year Three:
We have been looking at narrative during English lesson. We looked at the story ‘Stone Age Boy’ with a focus on the grammatical features used in the book. We have now started to plan and write our own narratives based on the story.

Year Five:
We have been creating narratives based on ‘One Small Step’, an animated video based around themes of loss, hope and growing up with dreams. We then created our own narratives based on Luna, the main character, and her son, who had similar problems when growing up

Year Six:
We have been using ‘The Arrival’ by Shaun Tan, a beautifully detailed picture book about a father having to leave his wife and daughter to travel to another country to find work. Our writing has focussed on the emotions of the characters in the story, using precise verbs and adjectives and figurative language to express these emotions.

We have written a narrative on a space child, who goes to space school. English has gone well this year. We made puddles in science, and Mr Haywood showed us how to filter water using different methods. In maths we did column addition and subtraction.

Science Blog

Read Now

It has been great to see children enthusiastically exploring their new science topics so far this term:

  • Year 1 have begun to learn about everyday materials and where they come from. They looked at natural and manmade materials and had fun exploring the different materials around them, saying whether they are manmade or not.

  • Year 2 have been learning about what a micro habitat is - they went on the search for micro-habitats around the school and observed the types of animals that live there.

  • Year 3 have begun to explore the topic of rocks, alongside their history topic of The Stone Age. In science lessons they have learned about the difference between igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks and will soon be learning about how fossils develop. They have had great fun examining real rocks for this topic.

  • In Year 4 the children have been learning about the classification of animals.  They started by investigating various ways they can group animals and what the similarities and differences are between the groups - for example: mammals, reptiles, amphibians or birds.  They then considered various habitats and how they are beneficial to their respective animals.

  • In Year Five this term the children have been exploring materials and substances. They have been explaining the meaning of properties of materials and categorising them by their properties. Children have also been experimenting with which materials are thermal and electrical conductors and insulators.

  • Finally, this term Year 6 have started to investigate the topic of electricity. The children have thoroughly enjoyed experimenting with the equipment: creating series and parallel circuits; analysing why some circuits may not work; and discovering the affect voltage has on the brightness of a light bulb.
