Year One News Year One had a very exciting start to the half term, we received a special letter from someone who kindly let us look at the old toys that they used to play with when they were younger. We had so much fun, looking and playing with these toys. We then wrote some adjectives and sentences on whiteboards to describe the old toys
In Science, we have enjoyed experimenting with water, seeing which items floated or sunk. We discussed the meaning of a fair test and what we would do to keep it a fair test. We also predicted whether the objects would float or sink before we put them in the water. We then tested the objects and recorded the results in a result table.
2VC have had a great start to the new half term. This is what we thought of our first week back. ‘I have enjoyed DT! We made stick puppets. We had to draw a dragon and then cut and stick it onto the lollipop stick.’ ‘I had fun drawing my dragon. I coloured it in green’. ‘In Maths, we have been adding 2-digit numbers to 1-digit numbers. It was fun when we used base ten to add the numbers together’. ‘We read the story ‘Tell me a Dragon’, it was all about different dragons.’ ‘In English I was using adjectives to describe the dragon.’

Thurrock School Sports Association Football Competition To get the season going the team competed in a league format before progressing to the knockout stages. After a slow start drawing with Abbots Hall and losing to Purfleet the boys found their rhythm and beat Dilkes and Lansdowne with one nil victories, both goals being scored by Jesse Chetiyar. After another nil nil draw with Arthur Bugler the team progresses to the quarter finals. Here they would play Warren Primary. Caught napping the team quickly went two nil down before a thunderous shot by Tajus Girnius gave them hope. It was one way traffic after that as the team pressed for the equaliser. Sadly, it was not to be. Some consolation was gained from the fact that Warren eventually went on to win the whole competition. It was a pleasure to take the team to St. Cleres and their behaviour, effort, performance and sportsmanship was a credit to our school. Star player for his tenacity and technique was awarded to Tajus. Clubs It is wonderful to see so many children participating in after-school sports clubs. Many clubs will give the children the opportunity to play in local school leagues. We have A and B teams entered in both Football and Netball leagues for the Autumn and Spring terms. PE Kit Many children will have had growth spurts this half term. Can parents/carers please take this opportunity to check that PE kit still fits and replace it if necessary. Children will need to bring their PE kit in to school at the start of each half term to ensure it is ready and available for all PE lessons. Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSO) After an assembly run by Lisa Clissold from Active Travel Year 5 applied for the roles of Junior Road Safety Officer (JRSO). Unfortunately, we could only select 4 pupils as the applications were numerous and very strong. The pupils chosen were Daisy 5CP Sutthida 5TH Stanley 5BG Jaelan 5NB The JRSO’s will work with Mr. Bennett to promote active and safer travel to and from school. There first project will be “Be Bright, Be Seen” in the second half of the Autumn term. 1FK have made a great start to the year. The children have adapted to their new classroom and we have had a very busy first term learning new things. In our English lessons, we have been focusing on writing instructions; we looked at features of instructions and learned about imperative verbs in a set of instructions. We watched a video about how to make a peg car and wrote our own set of instructions. During our DT lesson, we have been learning about wheels and axels. We had lot of fun designing our peg car, then following our instructions to made our own peg car. In our maths lesson we have been learning about ordinal numbers. We discussed what first and last mean to enable us to see numbers as positional. For our activity, we had had lots of fun, racing our peg car in groups at our tables to enable us to practice the use of the new mathematical language in sentences. We ended our peg car project by evaluating our cars. What did you like best about your car? Malachi – The wheels. Gracie – Racing the car. Joe – it can go fast. Bailee – My car is rainbow. 5TH have worked incredibly hard over the past half term, and it has been a pleasure watching them settle back into school life so well. Our work based around the Vikings in Britain has created some amazing conversations and even better pieces of work. We have really excelled in out written work, and the quality of the books in our class has really blown me away. A particular highlight was the fictional recounts which were written about a Viking Holmgang (a duel to first blood or the death). This really showed off our creativity and much improved understanding of grammatical concepts. In science we have investigated materials and how they can change state based on different variables. This has meant we have completed several exciting experiments, including the egg
