Writing Across Our School:
Another busy week of writing is happening across east Tilbury – let’s take a look at what each year group has been up to this week! Reception: These impressive children have been focussing on the book Perfectly Norman by Tom Percival, children have been sharing words with Grandma Fantastic and as a class, they have been verbally feeding back their ideas and have been ‘chotting’ as a class. Using their chotted ideas, the children have been creating their sentences, making sure to include their ‘wow’ words! Year 1: Our wonderful Year Ones have been focusing on creating reports. They have been exploring what makes a report and they have had to then create their own report based on teddy bears. The children have been chotting their ideas down and sharing them as a class; they have then gone onto form their own sentence stacks using their inspirational ideas. Miss Cosgrove even informed me that they were creating subheadings using alliteration, breathtakingly brilliant Year One! Year 2: The fabulous children in Year Two have been focusing on the story ‘The Crows Tale’. This week they began their independent write using a range of adjectives, similes and adding onomatopoeia to make our stories even more exciting. Some children had the chance to talk about their writing at the end of last week and they are really enjoying creating their own version. I can’t wait to read the final product of all their hard work! Year 3: Entering Key Stage 2 and we start with our hardworking Year Threes. They have been exploring the book ‘Stone Age Boy’ by Satoshi Kitamura and have been considering how they could recreate their own version of the story. Children have been working towards their own narrative by chotting and sentence stacking during lessons in the buildup, and they have been challenged to include similes and fronted adverbials in their sentences. Without a doubt, their work will be as impressive as a shooting star lighting up the night sky. Year 4: Our exceptional Year Fours have been writing a story about a lost thing based on Shaun Tan’s book – The Lost Thing. Children have been using sentence stacks, models, plans and their own ideas to create their own version; they have been putting a twist on the story by exploring what they could discover, where and what they would do with a lost being. They have been chotting ideas together and then stacking sentences in a build up to their independent piece. Year 5: The amazing Year Five pupils have been working hard to prepare for their independent write. They are writing a narrative based on the story One Small Step. It is an animated short about dreams, hopes and ambitions through tough times. They have chotted ideas, stacked sentences all in preparation for this final piece. The clip holds the message of never giving up and it resonates with all of us in school. Year 6: To our most experienced students: Year Six. Their work has been based On Shaun Tan’s ‘The Arrival’. This is a wordless graphic novel that tells the story of a man who leaves his homeland in search of a better life for his family. He travels to a strange, fantastical new world, filled with unfamiliar customs, creatures, and architecture. Pupils have been studying the emotions of various characters and foreshadowing of events. The children are writing their own narrative using the story, its values and messages as inspiration for theirs. Hello 3VP parents and carers!
We hope you’ve had a great week so far! Here are some important updates and exciting achievements to celebrate this week: P.E. Days Reminder Our P.E. lessons are every Tuesday and Friday, so please make sure to bring your children have their P.E. kits on those days. A huge well done to everyone who has consistently brought their kits—your dedication is fantastic! Let’s keep the momentum going and make the most of our active days. 5 Time a Week Readers We’re thrilled to see an increase in our dedicated readers! Last week, we celebrated 11 children who read 5 times a week, and an incredible 2 children (Caiya and James) who read 6 times a week! We’re aiming even higher this week and hope to give a big round of applause to even more 5 Time a Week Readers. Keep up the great reading, everyone! Assemblies Are Back! We’re excited to announce the return of assemblies this year, held on Mondays and Fridays. Our Friday assembly is extra special as it’s our celebration assembly, where we recognise our Stars of the Week, 5 Time a Week Readers, and Dojo Champions. It's a wonderful way to honour the hard work and achievements of our amazing children. We’re looking forward to another fantastic week filled with learning, growth, and celebration! English This half term, we have been exploring The Stone Age boy narrative in English and have started to create our own alternative versions; we have also been using this stimulus to create our own dance routines in P.E on Fridays. Ark Maths Mastery Scheme We are excited to announce that we have started a new scheme in maths called Ark Maths Mastery. For the last few weeks, we’ve been focusing on place value and discovering lots of interesting number facts. The children have been working hard, and we’re already seeing great progress. We can’t wait to dive into more topics as the term continues! Topic Lessons: The Stone Age In our topic lessons, we’ve been learning all about the Stone Age. We have been excited to discover new and fascinating facts about this ancient period of history. Both our art and history lessons have been focused on the Stone Age, allowing the children to get creative while deepening their understanding of this incredible time. Science: Rocks, Fossils, and Mary Anning In science, we’ve been exploring the world of rocks and fossils, learning about their formation and importance. We’ve also researched the life and discoveries of the famous palaeontologist Mary Anning, who has inspired us all with her incredible work in uncovering fossils. The children have been fascinated by this topic and have enjoyed investigating rocks up close! Reading Habits at East Tilbury Primary School
Here we are at the start of a new term and we are looking forward to another step up in your child’s reading progress and confidence. To ensure your children are reading at home, we will send out resources to help you support them. Your child should have received a new reading record and a banded reading book suited to their ability. If your child has not received either of these items, please contact your child’s class teacher. As you may know, the school also uses an online reading programme called Bug Club; we would like to take this opportunity to remind you of the ways you can help your child with their reading at home. What is Bug Club? Bug Club is a finely-levelled reading scheme, which ensures that all children can read books at exactly the right level for them. What’s more, there are online versions for every printed title and a personalised website for each child. What do the Book Band Levels mean? All school books and Bug Club books are graded into colour-coded Book Band levels, and within each level there is a carefully planned progression of books. This fine progression gives children plenty of opportunities to develop their reading skills. Using the online reading world If you have access to an internet connection, your child can enjoy reading Bug Club books online as well as in print. Each child has a unique homepage, and can log into it by following these steps: 1. Go to www.activelearnprimary.co.uk 2. Enter the login details. 3. Your child’s homepage will appear. Reading a book online Your child’s teacher will regularly allocate new books to your child according to their reading level and these books will appear on their personal homepage. By now your child should be quite used to the online environment and the process of answering quiz questions and earning ‘Bug Points’. If you haven’t already, why not ask your child to show you the books they have already read and how many rewards they have accumulated. The reader Until they are fluent readers, younger children will benefit from reading aloud to you as often as possible. By the time they are in Years 5 or 6, many children prefer to read silently to themselves. Create quiet opportunities for them to do so, but then talk to them about the book they are reading. Sharing reading When sharing a book with your child, try to take opportunities to talk about the book – before, during and after reading.
Welcome Back! I Cannot believe we are nearly halfway through our first half term already. The children have returned eager to learn we have been able to use whole school again now the RAAC has been sorted. For year 2 this has meant they have been able to get back into a classroom. It has been lovely to see how well the children have quickly settled into their new classes and daily routines. They have been amazing!
Each class should have been introduced to their new themes for this half term and the children seem eager to explore these more. I can’t wait to see to amazing work that will be produced. Year 2 have had a brilliant start to the year with their theme ‘Animals’. Their ball skills in P.E. have really impressed me, showing control with their hands and feet and have followed instructions carefully. We have also looked at place value in maths where the children have used Dienes, bead strings and cubes to make 2-digit numbers and partitioning them in various ways. In English we have been reading a story called ‘The Crows tale’, exploring powerful vocabulary and descriptive language. We have high expectations in year 2 and have set our standards high for the rest of the year. Exciting times for our maths teaching at ETP. Across the Osborne Cooperative Academy Trust, all the Primary schools have started using Ark Maths. This is an excellent resource and we are all excited about helping our pupils to achieve well in maths and to learn and understand Maths Mastery. Staff have ongoing training from Ark Maths to continue to up-level our teaching skills. Across the school, pupils have been working really hard and are embracing the new format of our maths lessons with enthusiasm
