Nurture Approach
Our At East Tilbury Primary School we have adopted a Nurture approach to teaching across the school where every classroom focuses on the six nurture principles:
• Children's learning is understood developmentally.
• The classroom offers a safe base.
• Nurture is important for the development of self-esteem.
• Language is understood as a vital means of communication.
• All behaviour is communication.
• Transitions are significant in the lives of children.
Following extensive research into the whole school Nurture approach in Scotland, where there has been a significant reduction in exclusions and children being placed in alternative provisions in some areas, we are endeavouring to replicate these positive outcomes at ETPS.
From Autumn 2020, we embedded nurture throughout the school to ensure that there is a clear emphasis on a nurturing approach as a universal pedagogy, supporting pupils’ wellbeing, whilst recognising the need to develop targeted approaches if appropriate. As a school, we recognise that outcomes for children and young people can be improved by enhancing practice at different levels and we want to ensure everyone involved has the capacity to play their part effectively. Our nurture approach forms part of our inclusive practise, and relates to our work around diversity and inclusion. As a school we are currently embarking on our Diversity Mark programme and look ahead to how this can benefit the school community moving forward.
How are our classrooms different?
• More time allocated for growth mind set activities and discussion about feelings and emotions.
• Digestive biscuits are available to help pupils maintain their concentration at around 10am or 2pm.
• Classroom teachers spend more time building effective relationships with the pupils in their class.
• Children eating lunches with their class peers means that they are building stronger friendships and understand each other’s differences and similarities
• Children begin to use language to express their feelings openly
