Computing at ETPS - Autumn 1

Read Now

Year 1 - Pupils developed their understanding of technology and how it can help them in their everyday lives. They have become familiar with the different components of a computer by developing their keyboard and mouse skills. Pupils also considered how to use technology responsibly.

Year 2 - Pupils developed their understanding of what information technology (IT) is and begun to identify examples. They discussed where they have seen IT in school and beyond, in settings such as shops, hospitals, and libraries. Pupils then investigated how IT improves our world and learnt about the importance of using IT responsibly.

Year 3 - Pupils used a range of techniques to create a stop-frame animation using tablets. The animations were  planned using a storyboard and when designed using Piskel included animation techniques such as onion skinning, layers and transform.

Year 4 - Pupils applied their knowledge and understanding of networks, to appreciate the internet as a network of networks which need to be kept secure. They learnt that the World Wide Web is part of the internet and were given opportunities to explore the World Wide Web for themselves in order to learn about who owns content and what they can access, add, and create. Pupils evaluated online content to decide how honest, accurate, or reliable it is, and understand the consequences of false information.

Year 5 - Pupils developed their understanding of computer systems and how information is transferred between systems and devices. They considered small-scale systems as well as large-scale systems and explain the input, output, and process aspects of a variety of different real-world systems. Pupils discovered how information is found on the World Wide Web, through learning how search engines work (including how they select and rank results) and what influences searching through comparing different search engines.

Reception Blog

Read Now

This week in reception we have been reading Everybody Counts by Kristin Roskifte. We have been deciding what our likes and dislikes are and using lovely vocabulary to describe animals.
In maths we have been using piles of objects and trying to decide which pile has the most or the least and putting them in order. We have to do this without counting. It has sometimes been tricky. We have counted the objects after to check we are right.
We have worked really hard this half term drawing pictures of ourselves and our friends in different ways. We have only used pencils to draw our faces, then we had a half photograph of ourselves and had to finish it. This week we have been drawing in colour.

Maths: Introduction to Addition and Subtraction
This week in Maths, we’ve started a brand-new topic: addition and subtraction. We’re learning how to use different strategies to solve problems, from simple sums to more complex calculations. Everyone has been practicing how to break numbers down into smaller parts to make it easier to add or subtract them. Soon, we’ll be tackling word problems and using real-life examples, which will help us see how useful these skills are in everyday life. Keep practicing those number bonds and mental math!

Geography: Exploring East Tilbury Through Maps
In Geography, we’ve been looking at how East Tilbury has changed over time by studying maps from different periods. We started with older maps and compared them to modern ones, noticing how the landscape, buildings, and roads have evolved. It’s fascinating to see how the town has grown, and how industries like the Bata Shoe Factory have shaped its development.

French: Describing People
In French, we’ve started learning how to describe people using simple adjectives. We can now say whether someone is tall (grand), short (petit), thin (mince), or fat (gros, masculine and grosse feminime). It’s been fun practicing with each other and making up descriptions for imaginary characters.

English: Our New Text – Farther
In English, we’ve begun reading our new text, Farther by Grahame Baker-Smith. It is story is about a father and son, and their dreams of flight. As we dive deeper into the text, we’ll be exploring themes of ambition, family, and imagination. So far, we’ve been discussing the characters' motivations and the emotions behind the story’s stunning illustrations. We have started to stack sentences and chot our ideas ready for our own creative writing.

Writing Across Our School:
Another busy week of writing is happening across east Tilbury – let’s take a look at what each year group has been up to this week!
Reception:
These impressive children have been focussing on the book Perfectly Norman by Tom Percival, children have been sharing words with Grandma Fantastic and as a class, they have been verbally feeding back their ideas and have been ‘chotting’ as a class. Using their chotted ideas, the children have been creating their sentences, making sure to include their ‘wow’ words!
Year 1:
Our wonderful Year Ones have been focusing on creating reports. They have been exploring what makes a report and they have had to then create their own report based on teddy bears. The children have been chotting their ideas down and sharing them as a class; they have then gone onto form their own sentence stacks using their inspirational ideas. Miss Cosgrove even informed me that they were creating subheadings using alliteration, breathtakingly brilliant Year One!
Year 2:
The fabulous children in Year Two have been focusing on the story ‘The Crows Tale’. This week they began their independent write using a range of adjectives, similes and adding onomatopoeia to make our stories even more exciting. Some children had the chance to talk about their writing at the end of last week and they are really enjoying creating their own version. I can’t wait to read the final product of all their hard work!
Year 3:
Entering Key Stage 2 and we start with our hardworking Year Threes. They have been exploring the book ‘Stone Age Boy’ by Satoshi Kitamura and have been considering how they could recreate their own version of the story. Children have been working towards their own narrative by chotting and sentence stacking during lessons in the buildup, and they have been challenged to include similes and fronted adverbials in their sentences. Without a doubt, their work will be as impressive as a shooting star lighting up the night sky.
Year 4:
Our exceptional Year Fours have been writing a story about a lost thing based on Shaun Tan’s book – The Lost Thing. Children have been using sentence stacks, models, plans and their own ideas to create their own version; they have been putting a twist on the story by exploring what they could discover, where and what they would do with a lost being. They have been chotting ideas together and then stacking sentences in a build up to their independent piece.
Year 5:
The amazing Year Five pupils have been working hard to prepare for their independent write. They are writing a narrative based on the story One Small Step. It is an animated short about dreams, hopes and ambitions through tough times. They have chotted ideas, stacked sentences all in preparation for this final piece. The clip holds the message of never giving up and it resonates with all of us in school.
Year 6:

To our most experienced students: Year Six. Their work has been based On Shaun Tan’s ‘The Arrival’. This is a wordless graphic novel that tells the story of a man who leaves his homeland in search of a better life for his family. He travels to a strange, fantastical new world, filled with unfamiliar customs, creatures, and architecture. Pupils have been studying the emotions of various characters and foreshadowing of events. The children are writing their own narrative using the story, its values and messages as inspiration for theirs.
