We are excited to be back from the Christmas holidays, Mogan said “I like being back”, Noelle said “ I was missing all my friends”, Caillen said I missed Mrs Green and Miss Dighton”.
Even though it has been freezing cold we have enjoyed playing in the reception garden, Bobbie said “I liked breaking up the ice with a toothbrush”, Adam noticed that the ice turned into water when he held it in his hand. Rivenna tried to break the ice with her feet but it was too hard. Isidora noticed that ice made a noise if you walked on it. We read the story Supertato, Bella said “I like evil Pea because he is green”, Arham said “I like Supertatoes costume, he is a good character”, Bobbie said “I like broccoli because Evil Pea drew on his face”. During maths we learned all about 3d shapes, we learnt some new vocabulary such as vertices, edges and faces. We even counted the faces on cubes and cuboids. We found out that boxes can be cubes or cuboids and a sphere is a ball. Sergiu said “I like learning it is my favourite”. 1SL have had a great start to the spring term, fully immersing ourselves in our new topic of ‘King and Queens’. We have enjoyed creating a banquet fit for royalty and writing some delicious menus. We identified what qualities a good monarch needs and have even taken turns to be a King or Queen for the day! We considered why rules are important and what would happen if there were no rules at all. In English we are looking at the traditional tale Rapunzel. We have focused on the events which happen at the beginning, middle and end of the story and we are beginning to plan our own version. In maths, we have been continuing to explore different strategies we could use to help us with addition, including counting on, make ten and using near doubles. We have been exploring how wheels and axels work in DT and are looking forward to designing and making our own carriages using these mechanisms. In science, we have started to classify animals based on their characteristics

I hope you all managed to see the Christmas songs from each year group on our school Facebook page and they brought you lots of ‘comfort and joy’ over the festive period. Reception, year 1 and year 2 ended 2025 with truly magical performances of the Nativity… how cute were the sheepy sheep? Year 2 also had the pleasure of a drumming workshop in the first week back after New Year. They must very, very good at keeping a rhythm and beat now. Year 3,4,5 have started to rehearse the songs for the Spring production of Rock Bottom by Craig Hawes: Stone Age musical comedy, set in the prehistoric town of Rock Bottom. The story follows Bobby Cobblestone, a young inventor whose previous attempts at creating useful tools have mostly failed. But all that is about to change. Year 6 have been studying feel – good music that is usually written in an upbeat major scale. They have used body percussion and glockenspiels to play along with some of the original tracks on you the Charanga music app that we use throughout the school. Finally, there is plenty more coming up over the rest of the year, in February the choir are heading to the 02 in London to perform at Young Voices, followed later in the year by both the infant and the Junior Music festivals. We also have two more RockSteady Gigs to look forward to and the year 6 leavers assembly in July, which always has a few good tunes involved! By Mr Rumble |
